FAQ | New Quotas

Your lines are always busy. How can I talk to someone?

With these new quotas, we are receiving more calls than ever. We invite you to carefully read the pages on our site that deal with the new quotas, to look over the FAQs for answers to your questions, and to write to us at info@fpaq.ca. We will do everything we can to answer your emails as soon as possible.

I tried to make an appointment with a forest engineer, but I can’t find one that can come before the deadline. What should I do?

Get an appointment with a forest engineer and ask him or her to provide you with written confirmation of the appointment (use this form). Include the written confirmation with your application.

When will we know who will be receiving a quota?

For more information, see the timetable on the New Quotas page

Is having other agricultural operations or another job an advantage or a disadvantage?

Neither. In evaluating your project, we simply want to determine its overall viability.

How many taps can I get?

Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec has authorized 5 million new taps, which must be in production by spring 2018 at the latest. The new taps will go to three different categories:

Young entrepreneurs and startup projects are eligible for a maximum of 25,000 taps.

For the expansion component, the taps will be distributed to all qualifying applicants in 200-tap increments. The rounds of distribution will continue until there are no more taps left. Producers who have received their total requested amount will be excluded from subsequent distribution rounds. In the last round, any remaining taps will be divided equally among the producers who haven’t yet received their total number of requested taps.

How did you determine the deadlines? They’re really soon!

We considered several factors. You don’t have a lot of time to prepare your application, but that leaves you more time to get your sugar bush up and running for the 2017 season. In the end, the official deadlines were set by Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec.

Do I need to own a sugar bush to apply for a quota?

In the young entrepreneur and startup categories, you can apply for a quota before you secure your sugar bush. The expansion component is for sugar bush operations that already have quotas, whether you own the sugar bush or have a lease or permit to operate it.

Will I lose my quota if my sugar bush isn’t operational by 2018?

Yes. Quotas that aren’t used within two years of being issued will be reclaimed by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers. We need these new taps now

Is the number of pounds per tap the same for the three components (young entrepreneurs, startup, and expansion)?

Yes. The quota per tap is 2.5 lbs, regardless of the component.
