Gilles-Gauvreau Award : Posthumous tribute to Gérald Morin

2018 Gilles-Gauvreau Tribute Award : Gérald Morin

Awarded since 2012, the Gilles-Gauvreau Tribute Award honors one or more maple syrup producers who has committed and contributed remarkably to the maple trade union life, which through its actions has helped to advance and shine maple syrup production in Quebec.

On May 29th, during the banquet evening as part of the Federation’s Annual General Meeting, the Gilles-Gauvreau Tribute Award was presented posthumously to Gérald Morin. The President, Serge Beaulieu, was honored to pay tribute to this great builder and presented the prize to one of his sons, Evan Morin.

He joined agricultural unionism through former grassroots unions in 1985 and worked for 31 years, holding various positions, including that of Regional Federation (Lotbinière-Mégantic and Chaudière-Appalaches), for 10 years. In 2005, he became president of the maple syrup trade union in the Quebec City region and, following the recast of the regional territories, president of the maple trade union Appalaches-Beauce-Lotbinière in 2013.

He will have served on the Federation’s board of directors for 11 years, including 6 years in the executive and 1 year in the first vice-presidency.

Mr. Morin fought heart and soul for the establishment and defense of the marketing system as we know it today in maple syrup production. He has been a member of numerous committees: quotas, marketing, promotion and public lands. But what he was most proud of in his achievements was to have found THE building in Laurierville, which today serves as a plant-warehouse.

Mr. Morin has been an outstanding ambassador for the maple syrup industry over the last quarter of a century. It is therefore without any hesitation that the executive council decided to award him this year the Gilles-Gauvreau tribute award.
